AZCA: The Financial and Business Center in Madrid

Did you think that Madrid is only a historical city in Spain? You are absolutely wrong. As a tourist, it might interest you to visit Madrid’s modern business district, which is located along the city’s large avenue called Paseo de la Castellana. This business district is known as AZCA, which stands for Asociación Mixta de Compensación de la Manzana A de la Zona Comercial de la Avenida del Generalísimo.

How did it start?
The development of AZCA started in 1969 with the main goal of creating a new business district outside the overcrowded city center. The construction of the district started in the 1970s. Today, tourists will be able to witness the modern and beautiful skyscrapers in Madrid.
What You can See in AZCA

AZCA is also known as Madrid’s Manhattan because of the cluster of modern skyscrapers.
Don’t miss taking a picture of the Torre Picasso. It is a 157-meter tower that was built in 1989 and is considered to be the tallest tower in Spain. Minoru Yamasaki, the same person who designed the World Trade Center Towers in New York, designed the building.

Equally interesting for tourist like you is Banco Bilbao Viscaya Argentaria, which is located south of the Picasso Tower. Francisco Javier Saenz de Oiza built it in 1980.

On the north of the Picasso Tower is the 30-story Torre Europa. It is a 121-meter round glass structure with external concrete columns. The external of the building was damaged when a car bomb was set off in front of it on May 1, 2002.

Another interesting place to visit in AZCA is the Bernabéu Stadium, which is home of Real Madrid, one of the most successful football teams in Europe. This stadium was constructed in 1947 but was expanded so many times. Today, it has a seating capacity of 80,000 people.

Are you a madrid football fan? You might want to time your visit when there is a football match. The stadium is accessible even if you don’t have a car. Just take the nearest metro station on Line 10 or take a bus. Several lines of buses such as bus numbers 14, 27 and 40 will take you there.
Would you want to experience nightlife in AZCA? There are bars, pubs, restaurants and discos lining the streets. There are also establishments under the arches and on the ground floors of several buildings in AZCA.
