Madrid is the third largest city in Europe and is the political and financial center of Spain. It is also the home of the Royal Family and the Golden Triangle’s astonishing cultural riches, which comprise of Reina Sofía, the Prado, and Thyssen-Bornemisza art museums.

Madrileños have moved on from the suppression of the Franco period. Perhaps more than any other Spaniards, they are determined to live life to the full (vivir a tope). The thirst for enjoyment, as well as Madrid’s 2,800 hours of sunshine every year, turns the city streets into vivacious centers of public display.

While the Comunidad de Madrid stretches more than 8,000 sq. km., you can easily explore the historic and cultural heart of the city on foot. The medieval quarter’s narrow and labyrinthine streets contrast with the splendid boulevards, laid out in the 1700s and 1800s – the era when the city started to acquire the features of a modern capital.

Every barrio has a unique atmosphere – Chueca, Malasaña, and Lavapiés are the oldest and perhaps the most interesting barrios. Many travelers first explore the central area, popularly called the Madrid of the Austrias, located between the Puerta del Sol (the city’s ‘mile zero’) and the Palacio Real. Gran Via, Madrid’s main street is only a short walk from here. This street is lined with bars and restaurants, shops, offices, cinemas, and banks.

You will find at the northern end of the Paseo de la Castellana the Puerta de Europa’s (Gateway of Europe) ‘leaning towers’. This daring display of architecture symbolizes Madrid’s outlook. These and more are what make Madrid one of the most visited cities in Europe

When is the best time to visit Madrid? If you are planning a vacation in Madrid, the best times are between the months of March and June and from September to October. You may want to avoid traveling to the city in July because it is the month when the heat is at its most punishing. August is still an extremely hot month. This is when most Madrileños take their holidays; the resulting flight to seaside resorts leaves the city rather empty.
